For diabetics, diet is more than a lifestyle choice--it*s the key to controlling the course of their disease. Many diabetics struggle their entire lives to maintain a healthy weight, but the guidelines given to them by the American Diabetes Association have proven unhelpful in regulating blood sugar--the critical component in keeping diabetes in check. In THE DIABETES DIET, Dr. Bernstein serves up the groundbreaking low-carbohydrate approach to diabetes care that has enabled his patients to take control of their disease by regulating their blood sugar without the usual swings.Dr. Bernstein himself is living proof of the success of this method, and he has the science to back it up. Just what the doctor ordered!!!!!!!!!!!!, 2008-06-26
This is a must read book for diabetics. I have always felt that a low carb diet works best for diabetics. Dr. Bernstein also recommends exercise. This is a must read.

The Diabetes Diet, 2008-04-14
I had previously been referred to a nutritionist and been given a low fat, low cholesterol, fresh fruit, fresh vegetable, whole grain type of diet. It evidently didn't work. Granted that I am now on a low dose of Metformin which my system has handled pretty well, but I am now testing consistently in the low 100's, sometimes lower, following the adoption of Dr. Bernstein's carb eliminaton diet. While I do make some exceptions, especially when travelling, I try to follow it strictly at home. The toughest part is breakfast. Forget everything you have previously been told. Fresh fruit - out, Oatmeeal - out, Low sodium vegetable juice - out, Whole grain cereals with fat free milk - out. Eggs - in. But it seems to be working. Lunch and dinner suggestions are easier to follow. The book does a good job explaining why the diet works. The price was less expensive and the information better than another fruitless trip to the nutritionist.

Some of the best information around, 2008-03-20
Recently diagnosed with diabetes type 2, I was being told to eat more complex carbs which in turn raised my blood glucose readings, so my medications were increased, and this became the cycle.. Eat, increase, until one day I thought.. why am I eating what my body is telling me not to? This book supplied the answer and gave me a way to take control of what my body says. My blood sugars are now almost normal and I wonder why this is not Mainstream knowledge for people who have diabetes. I feel better, am healthier and have no side effects! I would highly recommend this book along with Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution and Dr. Atkins Diabetes Revolution, and I would recommend that more physicians read up on this information.

useless, 2008-03-15
this book was useless. I am not interested in what foods contain very little carbs. i already know that, and most likely you do too.
i was hoping this book would tell you how to better dose the amount of insulin you take while on a low carb diet. it doesn't even mention anything close to that.
the main problem with most low carb diets for diabetics is dosing your insulin so you don't go too low, because if you do go low, then have to have a lot of carbs to bring up your blood sugar level. as most diabetics who have tried a low carb diet know, eating low carb is not the problem, it's not going too low on your blood sugars.
and he doesn't mention any effective ways to bring up your blood sugars if you go low.
in addition to that, the first 70 pages of the book are spent trying to convince you of his beliefs in low carb diets. only about 10 pages are devoted to telling you what he believes is a low carb diet.

I'm a Believer!!!!!, 2008-01-28
I've been a Type 2 diabetic for 20 years. During that time, I've gone through all the stages and medications. Two years ago I started taking insulin, but my diabetes was still essentially uncontrolled.
Reading this book has really changed my life, and lengthened it I believe. Dr. Bernstein just makes SO much sense. The book is an easy read and the recipies are uniformly delicious.
This not an easy eating plan to follow for life, but I'm convinced that an early death from diabetic complications isn't an acceptable alternative.
