An interesting discussion which will not make you any thinner, 2007-10-22
I have watched most of the Charlie Rose 'Science Series' which it seems to me is more a Health series than a General Science series. In any case this one was a quite interesting discussion. Rose himself is generally informed, understanding a good interviewer. He understands what he is talking about and is not ashamed to ask another question when he does not.
His co- host is also excellent.
Since Obesity has become for Americans like the weather i.e. everyone talking about but no one 'really' doing anything about it I thought I might know everything that they were going to say beforehand. I was wrong. The experts always bring some new information, research, insight and so make a program like this worth viewing.
The consensus says that yes there is an Obesity Epidemic, and that it is hitting young people raising the possibility that a generation will come which will have shorter and less healthy lives than their parents. Americans it seems are eating more junk foods in more places than ever before. One of the panelists complained about people eating in book- stores. Apparently to read alone is not enough anymore. One has to eat with it to be happy. There was a bit of talk about American bad habits spreading throughout the world, and the Japanese fattening up with fast- foods and so acquiring cardiovascular disease in the good old American way. More people now have more food available than ever before. And the rule seems to be for most people 'If it is here it will be eaten.'
As for diets all seemed to agree that almost any diet provides a means for losing weight for a short - time but that all diets which favor focusing on one food category only are doomed to end with weight restored. However at one point the point was made that a calorie of lettuce is still as much a calorie as a calorie of chocolate cake. "A calorie is a calorie is a calorie," all solemnly concluded.
But I do not mean to criticize here. The experts know their stuff.Eat less, don't eat that white sugar and flour, keep away from those transfats. Eat those vegetables, fruits and whole wheat stuff.
There was much more to this than I am indicating here. The panelists were as Rose's panelists for these forums generally, are - informed intelligent and even interesting.
